Learning at MSM happens in three ways:
  • individual lessons;
  • group theory classes;
  • ensemble coaching.

Individual instrumental lessons take place weekly. Students learn the techniques involved in playing their chosen instruments, work on playing pieces and exercises, and are introduced to reading music. Tutors will also help to develop ‘musicianship᾿ — the various listening skills, historical and stylistic knowledge, and compositional understanding that enable musicians to play a varied range of music appropriately and sensitively.

Theory classes are open to students by invitation, and usually run for three five-week terms before the exam entry date. In the classes, students gain an understanding of how musical notation works, and how to put this understanding into practice both in the practical instrumental work, and in original composition. Our tutors emphasise the relevance of theoretical knowledge to practical work, using examples from pieces students are studying.

Ensemble coaching is offered on either an occasional or regular basis. When students have reached an appropriate technical standard, they are encouraged to join an existing ensemble, or form one of their own, with other MSM students of a similar level. Ensemble work enhances students’ musical development, and gives students an understanding of how musicians rehearse and perform together. Student ensembles may also book time in the building to rehearse independently.
