About Us
The school’s approach is founded on two guiding principles:
- that musical literacy is critically important to any successful musician, amateur or professional;
- that music-making is fundamentally a social activity.
‘Without the ability to read music, students will always be dependent on a teacher, while self-reliance liberates the student to explore and develop without the teacher’s involvement,’ says Matthew Mills, MSM Principal. ‘It gives the student ownership of his/her work, making for a much more satisfying learning experience.’ At MSM, we encourage all students to work and think for themselves.
We also actively promote working with other musicians from the earliest available opportunity. In this way, students learn to listen, to interact with and contribute to a group, and to share the mutual responsibility and respect that are essential to any happy and prosperous team.
